HAPPY FIRST DAY OF FALL! As light and dark find balance at this time of year, we are aiming for that too.... OPEN HOUSE INFO: If you could not join us for the Open House, please take a look at the Open House Page- Click Here. NO SCHOOL & HOMEWORK: Because of the holiday, I did not give any homework that is due on Thursday. On the other hand, everyone should be reading and there are some items due Friday.
SUB ON THURSDAY: Teachers in grades 3-8 will be at an all day literacy training on Thursday, 9/24. I have been contacted by the substitute who will be in 5S. She is new to the area but was a classroom teacher for many years in Florida. I will make sure she has detailed plans and Ms. Meader and Ms. Cuddihy will also be in 5S to make sure everything runs smoothly. Of course, I don't mind learning new skills, but I am sorry to miss being with 5S. RECYCLING STARTS FRIDAY- At Driscoll, 5th graders are responsible for collecting and emptying recycle bins around the school. This happens every Friday morning at the start of the school day. The process begins this Friday, September 25th. Students should arrive by 7:45 or 7:50 at the latest to make sure they collect the bin before school starts. I will send home the list of the rooms 5S students will be taking care of. They will find out more about it on Thursday. CAVE DISCOVERY: 5S had a great conversation about the discovery of 1,500 or so hominid fossils in a South African cave. If you want to know more about it, you can go to this site: CLICK HERE. In the process of learning about caves, I found out that cave explorers no longer like to be called spelunkers. They prefer the term cavers- you can read more here. With that said, I hope everyone - cavers too- has a chance to be outside on this sunny entrance into fall. ~ Ms. S NEW PARENT BREAKFAST: If you are a new parent or want to meet new parents, please join the PTO, Driscoll administration and other new families on Wednesday, 9/16/15 at 7:30 a.m. in the library. Because of the word breakfast, I also imagine there being some goodies to eat and drink.
DRISCOLL PICNIC: Tomorrow (Wednesday) evening, September 16th is the annual Driscoll picnic. The weather should be perfect, and it is a lovely chance to reunite with old friends and make new connections. Bring a picnic blanket and food for your family and stop by any time between 5-7 pm on the Driscoll field and playground. CONSTITUTION DAY: This Thursday, September 17th is Constitution Day, also known as Citizenship Day. It is observed on September 17th, the day the U.S. Constitution was signed at the convention in 1787. It is not a widely known holiday. Here is some background: Constitution Day was created in 2004 with an amendment by Senator Robert Byrd. Before this, the holiday was known as "Citizenship Day". The law says that all public educational institutions, and all federal agencies, provide educational programming on the history of the American Constitution on that day. This holiday is not observed by granting time off work for federal employees. We, in 5S are looking at laws, the US Constitution and our own class Constitution. Stay tuned to learn more about it in the next HSC. OPEN HOUSE: This coming Monday, September 21st is an Open House. Grades K-2 is from 6-7 pm. Grades 3-5 is from 6:30-7:30 pm. Everyone starts in the Driscoll theatre for introductions to specialists. You will then go up to our classroom. Why should you go? You get to meet specialists and teachers. You get an inside look into what goes on in our classroom and find out what we have planned for the year. REMINDER SPECIALS

I will not duplicate (or will try not to duplicate) the Driscoll PTO Bulletin- Click Here I hope your family had a relaxing and beautiful labor day weekend. The weather was perfect if you love sun, blue skies and gentle breezes. HOT, HOT, HOT: The beautiful but hot weather is supposed to continue, so it is particularly important for your child to bring in a water bottle. I will have some spray bottles close by in case anyone needs a little spritz. Thank you to Joie's family for the extra fan. We now have four fans in our room, so we will have breezes blowing and paper weights to keep sheets from flying about. LISTENING CONFERENCES: This Thursday is the first round of listening conferences. If you would like to sign up for a time to meet with me, please read these directions and head to the PTC fast site. Click the file below for the directions: LISTENING SYMBOL--- CONFERENCE SIGN-UP Click HereHOME-SCHOOL CONNECTION: This Thursday, September 10th, you will receive your first Home/School Connection (HSC). I will send home a hard copy and post it on this website. They are usually given out on Thursday and are due after the weekend.
