Science Solstice 12/11/15
5S learned about lenses from Driscoll dad, Tad Gallion. We had a chance to explore the 5 foot hand-made camera obscura Tad made, we got to look through Tad's large telescope in the hall and every student got some binoculars.
After that 5S learned about Mars and what it might take to survive. Joie's dad, Ray, made an amazing powerpoint, taught 5S about morse code and how to grow potatoes. Then, Hannah's dad, Keith, used balloons to teach 5S about rockets and how they manage to get up to space. He taught us the formula F=MA. At recess, he launched three rockets. One went so far, it never came back!
5S also was visited by Blue Hills teacher, Shane, who brought a barn owl and a red tailed hawk. He showed how they are both birds of prey so they are alike, but also how they are different.
After recess and lunch, 5S were part of a Museum of Science Show on sound. We learned about how sound is waves of energy travelling. 5S saw how the sound waves created different patterns of sand on a plate and how it could break a glass. That took a while, but eventually, it was successful.
