Greetings 5S Families, You are cordially invited to "Tak A Cup Of Kindness and Poetry and Have Yourself A Solstice Cookie" on Tuesday,12/22/15 at 7:50 a.m. The "Tak A Cup of Kindness" line comes out of the poem. Auld Lang Syne, by the Scottish poet Robert Burns. If you don't remember the words or you would like to hear a Scottish man sing the tune, I have attached both for you- with a translation!
Why are we doing this? As we head into the darkest days of the year and out of 2015, it seemed like a good time to gather round and see some of what 5S has been doing and to listen to poems written and recited by our class and maybe you - if you have your own poem to share. Of course, if we are going to have a cup of kindness and poetry, we should also have a few treats too. In honor of Winter Solstice when the shortest day of the year is behind us and the days will get longer again, we are aiming for a "round like the sun" treat. I know cookies are not the ideal breakfast, but they are fun to have at any time with a cup of something cozy. If you have other "round like the sun" food, that is fine too. Nothing too much. And please make sure it is nut free. UP AND COMING: Thursday, 12/17/15 we head to the Franklin Park Zoo. We will have a class on animal adaptations with zoo animals to teach us and some exploring around the zoo. The animals have fewer visitors in the winter, so they are happy to have more company. Please make sure your child has proper clothing based on what the weather has in store, comfortable shoes, a snack, a lunch and drinks. Monday, 12/21/15 is Winter Solstice. 5S will measure our solstice shadows if the sun is out. Tuesday, 12/22/15- Cup of Poetry and Cookie Solstice Celebration - See information above. It will get going at 7:50 and be done by 8:30. Wednesday, 12/23/15- It's a full day of school. 5S will have a chance to have a day of cozy, completions and choice. We will read our new books from the book fair, create and do math puzzles and games, and watch another lovely Nature video about unlikely animal friendships. It's the perfect message for this time of year when we are more aware of loved ones near and far. As we bid goodbye to 2015, I hope your entrance into winter and 2016 has many moments when the stars seem brighter, the air seems lighter, the sun glows longer, the blue seems bluer and your to-do list evaporates into the spicy air.
